Wollongong Game Fishing Club - where and when it all began


The first committee meeting was held at the Masonic Club Wollongong, on the 19th of January, 1968 at 7.55pm.


Present at this meeting were:

  • George Bosley,

  • John Brew,

  • Alan Tilsley,

  • Ted Middleton,

  • Ian Whiteoak,

  • Tim Browning and

  • Norm Gerome.


Business- At this meeting it was moved that the club adopted the constitution of the Port Hacking G.F.C

The club penant would be red andwhite with a Marlin and a Lighthouse depticted on it.

The Joining Fee would be $ 8.00 per male member and @ 2.00 per female member and 50c per junior member.


Fishing Season- It would be the 1st Sunday in October and subsequently the 1st and 3rd Sunday’s in every month and finishing on the 3rd Sunday in june.


Fishing Times- It would be between 6.00am and 4.00pm.


Point Score- The pointscore adopted was the same as Sydney G.F.C and the Porthacking G.F.C for Sharks.

The Meeting closed at 11pm.



22nd June 1968 - The First Trophy Night was a Dinner Dance that was held and the cost was $2.50 per head, and a 2 piece orchestra to be engaged.


1st December 1969- Jack Barker was to organize the Construction of the Gantry to weigh in the fish, it was to be 16ft in height.


7th July 1971- Pointscore Changed to every 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month.


1970/71- Season the First Marlin was captured in the Club.


26th September 1972- All Public holidays to be included as Pointscore Days.


1971/72- Season was our first excursion to Greenwell Point for the Shoalhaven G.F.C Competition.


13th November 1973- Fishing days were changed back to every 1st and 3rd Sundays with Public Holidays.


29th June 1974- Fishing days were changed to any Saturday or Sunday from Wollongong including Public Holidays.


7th October 1975- Fishing days were changed to be the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month.


3rd December 1976- Wollongong G.F.C is now part of the Southern Zone of N.S.W.G.F.A incorporating    Shoalhaven, Batemans Bay, Canberra, Bermagui and Merimbula Clubs.


4th February 1977- New Club Journal called "The Gaff" was adopted from this meeting.


2nd October 1977- We adopted the N.S.W.G.F.A pointscore factor system and we also adopted the tag and release pointscore system.


8th October 1977- Deleted Grey Nurse Sharks as a pointscore fish.


2nd December 1979- 2nd Gantry to be erected at 9am ( ?? 25th of August, 1979.)


4th January 1980- Sold old scales for $100 and bought 200kg scales for $300.


1st January 1980- Wollongong’s Sportfishing Club and Wollongong’s G.F.C had their first challenge on the 23rd of April 1980.


4th July 1980- Fees increased to $15.00 for all anglers.


1979/80 Season- Wollongong G.F.C went from being part of Southern Zone to being part of Central Zone incorporating Port Hacking, Botany Bay, Sydney and Broken Bay.

2017/2018 Season- Club meetings are held on the 2nd Wednesday of every month at the Towradgi Park Bowls and Recreation Club in Towradgi starting at 7pm.
